Clusters and Economic Development in the South

Under the auspices of His Excellency the Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, ENID/El Nidaa is hosting its Sixth Annual Conference over 14-15 February 2019 in Luxor. It is taking place at the Jolie Ville Kings Island Hotel. 

The objective of the Conference is to discuss “clusters” as an effective model for stimulating economic development, by graduating handicrafts production from single to geographically concentrated units and group entities, with value chain advantages that can lead to significant raises in earnings.  

Sessions will be presented by distinguished academics and practitioners in economic cluster development. The meetings will explore best practices from the Chinese, Indian, Moroccan experiences as well as address the needs and challenges constraining cluster development in Egypt. Participants of the conference will also be given the unique opportunity to observe field work on the ground, with a visit to key agricultural and industrial projects, the ready-made garments factory and small handicraft cluster workshops in Qena Governorate. 

The Conference is expected to host over 250 participants, including H.E. the Minister of Investment and International Cooperation, Sahar Nasr, H.E. Minister of Social Solidarity, Ghada Waly, H.E. Minister of Planning Monitoring and Administrative Reforms, Hala Al Said, H.E. Minister of Tourism, Rania Al-Mashat, H.E. Minster of Migration, Nabila Makram, H.E. Minister of Local Development, Mahmoud Sharawy,  M.E. Gen. Abdel Hamid Al Hagan, Governor of Qena, H.E. Governor Ahmed El Ansary, Governor of Souhag H.E. Governor Mostafa Alham, Governor of Luxor, H.E. Amb. Assistant to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hany Selim and Ms. Randa Abou El Hosn, UNDP Resident Representative in Egypt. Senior local administrative staff, civil society organizations, and international donor organizations will be represented, as well as local beneficiaries. 

The Conference is executed through generous contributions from Bank of Cairo, Alex Bank, the National Bank of Egypt, Commercial International Bank, the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and Support to the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Reform Programme (TVET).
